Engineering for Kids - Summer 2021 - At Octane Raceway (Scottsdale)

Camp prices:$350/week full-day camp

Age groups:
Master (entering 5th through 9th grade in the fall)
Campers in the Master program go deeper into the curriculum to create more elaborate and sophisticated projects. We plan a lot of curriculum unique to the Masters, so check out each week's offerings below. Already a Minecraft savant? Acing that STEM class in school? The Masters program at Octane is perfect for beginning and intermediate engineers alike!
Camp schedule:
8:30am-9:00am: Drop-off
9:00am-10:30am: AM Camp Session
10:30am-12:00pm: Kart Racing or VR Gaming
12:00pm-12:30pm: Lunch
12:30pm-2:30pm: PM Camp Session
2:30pm-3:30pm: Octane Activities (mini bowling, arcade games, bag toss, RC kart challenge)
3:30pm: Pick-up
3:30pm-6pm: Optional Extended Care
(Campers signed up for Extended Care and those whose parents have not arrived by 3:45pm will be picked up next door at Mavrix, a sister location for Engineering For Kids.)
Lunch
Due to state regulations for full-service kitchens, Octane Raceway is unable to allow outside food. All food must be purchased from Octane on the first day of camp each week. Lunches and healthy snacks will be provided to all campers by Octane according to the following weekly pricing schedule:
- $50 (tax not included) = 5 lunches with drink and 10 healthy snacks
The full list for lunch options will be available at sign-in on the first day of camp. (Prices will be adjusted for the four-day Memorial Day week.) Please let us know on the first day of camp and through the child information form you complete during registration if there are any allergies we should be aware of and this information will be passed along to the instructors and Octane's kitchen staff.
Extended Care
Octane and Mavrix will be handling extended care in-house this year and can be purchased through them. Octane Raceway campers will take their things and attend Extended Care next door at Mavrix with our other campers there. You will sign them out at Mavrix.
Regarding Safety and Our Instructors
At EFK, safety is our #1 priority. All campers will receive a green wristband each day for identification which the facility staff also recognize. EFK's staff will have ID badges and will be wearing official EFK shirts. Our STEM instructors are background-checked and have current fingerprint clearance cards. They receive training on our curriculum and in areas of classroom management. All of our lead instructors are either certified teachers or have years of experience in STEM and/or education fields.

Regarding Health & Safety
We want you to rest assured that we're taking many precautions to keep your child, our staff, and the public safe. These steps include:
- lowered enrollment caps to ensure proper distancing in our camp spaces (exact size depends on classroom space available)
- sanitizing touch-points and camp materials routinely
- staff and campers sanitizing hands frequently
- following each host facility's facial covering guidelines
- Summer Camps (Kids entering 5th-9th grade)
LEGO EV3 Robotics: Olympic Games
In this exhilarating program, campers will be diving into a new robot build each day to see who takes home the medals for open-ended design. We’re offering our classic “Robo-Battles” curriculum, complete with sumo wrestling, sprint challenges, and tug of war, but with new twists and turns. Using an improved and simplified coding interface, campers can spend less time buried in the code and more time focusing on the daily tournament challenge. This may be our best EV3 curriculum yet, so be sure to check it out!

Minecraft: Urban Build Challenge
We’re pulling out all the stops with Minecraft this year! We’ve invested in our very own private Minecraft Java Edition server that’s perfect for meeting all our educational needs. In this creative week of camp, kids will work together in the same world to construct an entire city that functions as a home for the whole class. Learn from civil engineers and city planners to create a blueprint and map out everything a city needs to exist. It’s sure to be our best Minecraft camp yet! (No Minecraft account required.)

Vex Robotics: Battle Royale
In this open-ended camp, kids will put our Vex robotics kits to the ultimate test with a winner-take-all robo-battle royale! Discover the attributes of successful battle bots and learn how to implement those concepts into your own builds. Constantly improve through rigorous testing as you dial in your robot’s efficiency and power. Understand the concepts of torque and gear ratios to grant strength and stamina. Everything culminates in a no-holds-bar tournament on Friday where the last robot standing is crowned the champion!

Rocket League: Esports & Entrepreneurshi
Buckle up and keep your eye on the ball — believe it or not, Rocket League is coming to Engineering For Kids! This wildly popular action game took the esports world by storm and now we’re offering perhaps our most ambitious curriculum to date: Esports & Entrepreneurship! Form a team, create a brand identity, design your own logos, and hone your teamwork skills as you practice and improve at Rocket League right on our computers at camp. As if you needed more to get excited about, you’ll be competing on the leaderboard with campers from other Engineering For Kids franchises all around the world!

Theme Park Simulator
All new maps and challenges await in this revamped, epic week of camp! The secrets of roller coasters and their tantalizing fun lie in all the complex engineering and physics concepts at play from the moment you strap in to when you hop off to get back in line. However, an exhilarating coaster wouldn’t have any riders without a theme park to call home. Back by overwhelming demand from the previous summer, Theme Park Simulator will instill the knowledge you need in fields like physics, finance, business management, and even marketing and PR to construct your dream park and attract adrenaline-hungry guests.

Minecraft: Beyond Survival
On our private, fully custom server using Minecraft Java Edition, campers will band together to thrive in our sprawling survival world. Level up your character in areas like weaponry, smithing, and enchanting to match the play style you want. Explore a virtually infinite map with treasures to be found and challenges to be met. Best of all, if your child wants to keep accessing our server from home after the week is over, we’ll be offering a special monthly price for continued access with an account straight from us. Shape Your World with AR
Augmented reality is the hottest consumer tech on the market today and the potential is limitless. Hold and manipulate a glowing digital landscape in your hands, program a custom game to be played simply by turning your fist, and apply your imagination to create something never seen before! Our instructors will teach concepts like programming, digital literacy, and game design for a balanced camp experience. Using our kid-friendly headsets and standalone Android devices, each camper will work through the week toward a respectable, playable video game that fits in the palm of their hand. App Development with JavaScript
Campers in our App Development program will go through the entire process of creating a useful app: identifying a problem, analyzing the market, programming a custom app, working through a testing phase, and creating a pitch to ‘sell’ what they’ve come up with! Best of all, we’ll be introducing the foundations of JavaScript, a real-world programming language used by millions of tech professionals. Roblox Game Studio
The only limitation is your imagination! Roblox offers a streamlined approach to multiplayer video game design by giving campers creative assistance at every step of the process. They’ll figure out just how much work goes into making their favorite games, like Fortnite and Minecraft, and have the opportunity to replicate them with their own twists. Our instructors are equipped with new and improved curriculum to guide all campers through the functions and features of the platform. Minecraft: Esports & Entrepreneurship
