Author Jon Klassen’s newest offering, The Rock from the Sky, is a long-form picture book featuring five interconnected stories. Simple dialogue is offset by sly humor and a vague but unsettling sense of foreboding that will keep you turning pages at a brisk pace. The three main characters –animals bedecked with quirky hats, naturally – are rendered in neutral tones with soft watercolors. Their interactions present familiar human sentiments like jealousy, friendship, and betrayal as they navigate a mysterious world where giant meteors, alien life forms, and time travel are the daily reality. Fans of Klassen’s tongue-in-cheek tales will not be disappointed.
Jon Klassen is the author-illustrator of I Want My Hat Back, an E. B. White Read-Aloud Award winner and a Theodor Seuss Geisel Honor Book; This Is Not My Hat, winner of the Caldecott Medal and the Kate Greenaway Medal; and We Found a Hat. He is also the illustrator of two Caldecott Honor Books, Sam and Dave Dig a Hole and Extra Yarn, both written by Mac Barnett. Jon Klassen lives in Los Angeles.
Ages 4-8
Each purchase of The Rock from the Sky will come with a signed bookplate, while supplies last.
