Highlands Center for Natural History

Originally referred to as the Community Nature Center (an organization that hosted programs using a 20-acre natural site in the Prescott Unified School District), the Highlands Center for Natural History has served the residents of Central Arizona for nearly three decades. The Highlands Center was formed in 1996 and assumed the mission of the original organization. Since that time the Highlands Center has grown to offer an 80-acre campus nearby Lynx Lake, build outstanding facilities and offer community events and education year-round. We do this with the continued support of community partners, members and donors. In our attempt to live and model our values we built a campus that showcases environmentally sound building techniques including passive and active solar energy, water collection systems, a constructed wetlands waste management system, and drought-tolerant landscaping. The complete development of our campus has been based on minimal impact and sustainable building practices. The James Learning Center has achieved a Gold Rating from the U.S. Green Building Council LEED (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) certification program. The LEED Rating System is a set of guidelines that evaluates environmental performance and provides a definitive standard to measure and document our green building goals.
