Phoenix Trolley Museum

Would you be surprised to learn that Phoenix was built around streetcars? In 1887, the first mule-drawn streetcar rolled on freshly laid rails down Washington Street. At its peak around 1920, the system ran on over twenty miles of track on city streets. Service continued until a suspicious car barn fire in 1947 destroyed most of the streetcar fleet, forcing the city to shift to buses as the backbone of the transit system. Today, the Phoenix Trolley Museum is dedicated to the preservation of original Phoenix trolley cars and memorabilia and public education about their place in the history of America's sixth largest city.
